40. Kyow (Joe)

Naing Naing Kyow is the first Deaf man in Myanmar to ever study theology and graduate as a Christian pastor. But it sure wasn’t easy.

A tireless worker. An undaunted leader. A gentle soul. A father to the kids. An unsung hero. His name is Pa-lian.

Nuam has the distinction – without doubt – of being the most expressive signer I have ever met. Watching her at work was sheer joy.

Some say that Hugh is beyond hope. That he has no future to speak of. Why do we bother with kids like Hugh?

Is suffering the result of divine punishment, cultural misfortune or bad genetic luck? Jesus was asked this and he had a very clear answer.

Until recently it would have been considered a cruel joke to give a deaf person a mobile phone.

There is simply nothing better than climbing in the back of the van, and so they do. Twenty of them.

My heart starts to break for her but then she stuns me with this:
“I like being deaf.”

I don’t travel well. But this is not a holiday.
